The information you need for a website reference 

  • The author of the web page 
  • The year the page on the website was published or last updated  
  • The title of the web page 
  • The title of the website 
  • The URL or web address of the web page 
  • And, the date you accessed the page.

The information goes in this order: 

  1. Authors surname
  2. Author's first name and/or initial
  3. The year the web page was published or last updated
  4. The title of the web page
  5. The title of the website
  6. The URL/ web address
  7. The date you accessed the page

To punctuate the reference: 

  • The author’s surname is all in capitals, followed by a comma; 
  • The first name is followed by a full stop 
  • The year the page on the website was published or last updated is followed by a full stop 
  • The title of the webpage, in inverted commas, is followed by a full stop 
  • The title of the website is in italics followed by the word ‘online’ in square brackets, followed by a full stop 
  • The words ‘Available at…’ introduces the URL or web address of the page. 
  • And finally, in square brackets, the word ‘accessed’ and then the date the website was accessed, followed by a full stop.  

SURNAME, Name. Year. 'Webpage'. Website [online]. Available at: URL [Accessed date].

To cite a web page within your writing…  

  • Place the in-text citation where you refer to the web page.
  • Use the author’s surname and the year the page on the website was published or last updated.
